City of Longmont

Sustainability communications & marketing

From plan to practice: helping Longmont tell its own sustainability story.

Domoto partnered with the City of Longmont’s Sustainability and Communications teams since 2023. We began with stakeholder engagement and a Sustainability Strategic Communications Plan that set the audiences, messaging approach, and a multi-year playbook. In 2024 and 2025, the City brought us back to implement it: an editorial calendar, bilingual and accessible stories and campaigns, and cultural broker workshops to reach residents the City wasn’t reaching.

The challenge

Longmont’s sustainability work was nationally recognized, but many residents didn’t see what it meant for them. Frontline residents, including Spanish speakers, people with disabilities, and older adults, were the hardest to reach, and many were wary of City channels. A plan alone wouldn’t change that. So we worked alongside City staff to put it into practice, connecting sustainability to everyday issues like water, waste, and extreme heat. We brought cultural brokers into stakeholder workshops to co-design how to reach their communities. Every story, video, and post was produced in English and Spanish and built to digital accessibility standards. Throughout, we set up and coached the team on the systems needed to sustain the work.

The biggest result is capacity: the City’s Communications and Sustainability teams now run the editorial calendar and performance tracking themselves. Sustainability has a recognizable, bilingual, accessible presence across City channels.
